Can I bring my spouse or partner to the UK while I’m on a student visa?
Can I bring my spouse or partner to the UK while I’m on a student visa?

For many international students, getting accepted into a UK university is a dream come true. But for those in a committed relationship, that dream feels incomplete when they have to leave their partner behind.

One of the most heart-wrenching questions we hear is:
“Can I bring my husband or wife with me while I study in the UK?”

Here’s everything you need to know — not just the legal side, but the human reality behind the rules.

Yes, but only under certain conditions

The UK does allow international students to bring dependents (your spouse, civil partner, or children) — but only if you're studying an eligible course. As of the latest update:

✅ You can bring your partner if:

  • You're enrolled in a postgraduate programme that is at least 9 months long, AND
  • The programme is a research-based course (like a PhD or MRes), OR
  • Your university sponsors you as a government-funded scholar

❌ You cannot bring dependents if:

  • You're doing an undergraduate course
  • You're on a taught master's degree without meeting the above conditions

These rules are strict — and yes, they’ve changed recently.

We’ve spoken to many students who break down in tears when they realise their spouse can’t come along — or worse, when they try to apply without understanding the rules and get refused.

Being apart during such an important time is emotionally draining. There’s loneliness, pressure, and in some cases — depression. It’s more than just paperwork. It’s about staying together.

That’s why it’s so important to plan ahead. If your course isn’t eligible for dependents, consider deferring or switching to a research-based programme if family unity is a priority.

What Are the Requirements?

If you're eligible, your partner can apply as a Student Dependant, and will typically need to show:

  • Valid marriage or relationship proof (for unmarried partners, at least 2 years of cohabitation)
  • Proof of your visa/course
  • Maintenance funds:
    • Around £845/month (outside London) or £1,020/month (inside London), for each dependent, for up to 9 months

Once approved, your spouse can live and even work full-time in the UK — a major benefit for families.

GMS Immigration Tip:

We always remind clients: Think long-term. If your goal is to settle in the UK together, it’s better to align your academic plans with your relationship goals. Don’t let a rushed application cost you months apart.
